The key to the winning design by Janna Levenstein is the interplay between indoor and outdoor, the subtlety of nature and the bold visual lines of the Viking Designer Series. “I am a designer, but I also am a real estate broker and property developer. I have my own brokerage firm, Tocha Realty. From the moment I started searching for properties, I saw brokers’ ads that read ‘all Viking kitchen,’” says Levenstein. “It’s a real draw to get people in the door. It helps to brand the home as quality. Buyers and sellers know how important it is to have Viking products for resale. It’s simply a name people trust and want to see.”

Charles Buller

The winner of the annual Viking Featured Designer Award for 2008 is Charles Buller, president of Park Place Wood Products, Inc., Oregon City, Oregon. His award-winning entry is a chef’s dream kitchen for the annual NW Natural Street of Dreams™ luxury-home tour that draws more than 100,000 visitors each year. “We combined many different custom finishes, door styles, and furniture elements — all integrated into a very specially designed kitchen area,” says Buller. “All my visions for a wonderful, extraordinary, and quality kitchen designed around cooking activity were met by the full line of Viking professional products.”

Janie K. Hirsch
Johns Creek, Georgia
Using color as a neutral, in conjunction with texture and pattern, Janie K. Hirsch, ASID, designs interiors that feature an eclectic combination of classic furnishings and antiques with a strong connection to architectural elements. She always wants to use the best products — and that means Viking. “Viking products offer great function and versatility — you can always find what you need,” says Janie, owner of J. Hirsch Interior Design in Johns Creek, Georgia. “My clients value function as well as beautiful design.”

Brian Zars
San Antonio, Texas
Brian Zars is a passionate advocate for both the benefits of outdoor living spaces and the quality and versatility of Viking products. He was selling custom swimming pools for his father’s company, Keith Zars Pools, and was looking for his own niche. Designing and installing outdoor kitchens filled with Viking products became that niche and more. It’s a calling — Zars thinks no swimming pool is complete without a Viking outdoor kitchen.

Randi Skiffington

Multiple Viking options strike the perfect note throughout this New Hampshire vacation home that beautifully blends the rustic and the contemporary. Designer Randi Skiffington, who often works on projects with her ex-husband, builder Joe Skiffington, has been serving clients in new Hampshire’s Lake Region for over a decade. Randi says she believes in Viking products because they offer so many options in terms of function and design.

Even a showroom fire could not delay the creation of her contemporary, clean-cut and glossy kitchen in San Jose. Jennifer Ho, CKD, CBD, is a designer with De Anza Interior, a San Jose, California business founded by her mother, Teresa Ho. Ho specializes in kitchen design and believes that experience is an important factor in the design process. “I have done most of my learning on the job,” says Ho, a National Kitchen & Bath Association Certified kitchen Designer (CKD).

Nicole Sassaman
Malibu, California
Nicole Sassaman of Nicole Sassaman Designs, Malibu, California, designed her award-winning entry for the Malibu home she shares with her husband and baby daughter. She has renovated and sold several residential properties in Los Angeles. She describes the house in Malibu as “a 1980’s wannabe Spanish villa with arches everywhere.” It is a project she holds close to her heart. Rather than resell it, she plans to live in the house with her family.

A Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD),Sherman began her career working for a high end design firm shortly after earning a degree in interior design from Marymount College (now a part of Fordham University)in Tarrytown, New York. About seven years ago, she decided to strike out on her own, opening Thyme & Place Design in Wyckoff, New Jersey.

A graduate of Humber College with a degree in interior design, Kevin Fitzsimons owned and operated Fitzsimons Interiors, Inc. for over 20 years. In 2006, he founded Fitzsimons Design + Build to combine his interior design experience with international affiliates in the architectural and design fields. He is also the creator of yoursource, a quarterly magazine about lifestyles, design and architecture. Over time, he has built a roster of clients which include the Viking award-winning kitchen of Art Smith, Oprah Winfrey’s personal chef.
