The April winning kitchen design is located in Pasadena at a Spanish/Moorish Residence built in 1928 by architect Harold Bissner. The goal of the project was to create a kitchen for today’s casual and family integrated lifestyle while making it feel original to the house. The challenge was to open up a series of small rooms to preserve and gracefully incorporate the butler’s pantry, phone nook and other select elements from the original kitchen,

"Viking appliances were chosen based on performance, reputation, and features including sealed burners, high BTU burners, substantial grates and infrared broilers,” said Judith Vogt. “Aesthetics were also a factor in appliance selection with Viking offering handsome design, attractive handles and gorgeous colors."

This kitchen is an example of gracefully merging different eras. The flavor of the original 1928 Spanish/Moorish architect built house remains intact while incorporating contemporary appliances inserted into period correct cabinetry. Other elements include soapstone countertops, unlacquered brass hardware and custom made deco tile to match the original tile which was saved and applied to the hood.

"The Viking range in the stunning color is the jewel in the crown."" said Vogt. ""We chose field tile in a color to coordinate with the Viking range and the original deco tile, and used a randomized pattern with a number of sizes to add visual interest to the backsplash."
