Super Stromboli

Take everyone’s favorite meat lover’s pizza, roll it up and you’ve got a Super Stromboli in less time than it takes to wait for pizza delivery. Sliced deli meats, prepared pizza dough and ready-to-use real bacon are the ingredients combined in this stromboli that will please the whole family. I like to use turkey pepperoni to minimize the fat in the recipe, but you can substitute full-fat pepperoni or hard salami.

Use the recipe as a base to create other variations. And, if your supermarket or local pizzeria sells ready-to-bake fresh pizza dough, by all means use it. The stromboli may take as much as 20 minutes longer to bake since real pizza dough is sold in one-pound packages. You can tell when the stromboli is done by inserting an instant-read thermometer into the center. A reading of 200 degrees F indicates that all of the dough should be completely baked.

The stromboli is delicious served with warm pizza sauce for dipping. It is a great weeknight family entrée or can be served as part of a hearty Super Bowl appetizer buffet.

  • 1 10-ounce can refrigerated all ready pizza dough*
  • 3 slices boiled ham
  • 5 slices Provolone cheese
  • 24 slices turkey pepperoni
  • 1/2 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons crumbled real bacon bits*
  • 1 cup warm spaghetti or pizza sauce, for dipping
Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Unroll pizza crust on a baking sheet. Place ham slices on the crust, top with provolone and pepperoni. Sprinkle with mozzarella and bacon bits. Roll jelly roll style, press ends to seal and position so that the seam side is facing down. Bake 25 minutes, or until golden brown. Slice into 10 1-inch pieces and serve with the warmed sauce.

Makes 6 main dish or 12 appetizer servings.
